The latest update as of November 4, 2022

The final NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Regional of the 2022 season is underway at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It's the second week of the busiest stretch of the year for the facility, following last week's four days of the NHRA Nevada Nationals, a test session on Monday of this week, and now four more days of racing to wrap up the two weeks of almost non-stop racing. For the Top Alcohol cars, it's the final chance to gain points towards the world championship at a regional event, and it's expected that almost every racer in the top ten in both Dragster and Funny Car will be on hand. The first two qualifying sessions go off this afternoon, with a final one scheduled for tomorrow, and the first round of eliminations later that afternoon.

Looking at the entry lists for next week's season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals, the top six dragsters in the standings are entered, among a total of 12 of the top 20 racers in that category. Presumably, most of them will be competing this weekend at Las Vegas as the traditional prelude to the Pomona race. The 2021 edition of the final West Region event attracted 17 entrants and this year's version should be close to or exceeding that number. On the Funny Car side, five of the top 20 racers are entered for Pomona, including the two remaining contenders for the 2022 World Championship, Shane Westerfield and Doug Gordon. Both will almost certainly be racing this weekend as they both have one regional points-earning opportunity remaining.

The battle for the dragster championship has been whittled down to three racers: Joey Severance, Matt Cummings, and Jasmine Salinas. With all three entered for the Finals, it's also presumed that they will be competing this weekend. Even though Severance cannot gain any more regional points, he can act as a blocker to prevent Cummings or Salinas from gaining ground on him going into the season's final race next week.

This weekend's event at The Strip will almost certainly be a pivotal race in deciding the Top Alcohol championships, and we'll bring you more details and results during the next three days. Stay tuned!
