10:00 AM UPDATE

Despite his best efforts, including the quickest pass in the first qualifying session last night, Mike Salinas has been officially eliminated from championship contention in Top Fuel. He now sits 171 points behind leader Steve Torrence but could only gain a maximum of 165 points if Torrence qualifies in the bottom quarter of the field and loses in the first round. In second place in the standings, Brittany Force fell off her torrid string of qualifying results, landing in the #11 spot in the field and losing ground to Torrence. She now sits 108 points behind him and could see herself eliminated from the chase when qualifying ends this afternoon.

In Funny Car, two of the three "on the bubble" racers were eliminated from contention, despite the low qualifying effort of Robert Hight and the #6 position of Bob Tasca III. That leaves John Force on very thin ice as he needs the racers above him in the standings to fall in the first round while he wins the race, after taking low qualifier in each of today's sessions and #1 for the entire field. A very tall order for the "ol' truck driver".

At the top of the points heap sits Ron Capps, and he widened the gap on second place Matt Hagan last night. It's now a 61 point lead, or just a hair more than two round wins. If that margin stays the same, or widens, then Hagan will have a very difficult time catching him.

To be continued... stay tuned!
