The latest update as of August 2, 2021

It's my birthday today (71st... and thankfully, still counting!) so the update will be short and concise. The long-delayed Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals was completed over the weekend and we've got the latest national points standings for the Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars. And that's about it for today.

TAD National Points Standings - August 1, 2021

The biggest change in the T/AD standings saw Shawn Cowie move into a tie for the lead with Rachel Meyer. Cowie took the event win at the Winternationals, and leapfrogged over idle racers, Jackie Fricke and Julie Nataas to the top rung on the ladder. Also making a big move was Cowie's final round opponent, Joey Severance who jumped all the way from #10 to #5 on the basis of his runner-up finish. Below the Top Ten, west coast racers, Casey Grisel improved from the #17 spot to #14, and Kim Parker moved into the #18 position.

TAFC National Points Standings - August 1, 2021

The season-long battle between the defending TA/FC champion, Doug Gordon and former two-time champion, Greg Bellemeur continued, with Gordon picking up second round loser points - certainly not the result he was looking for at the Winternationals, to move ahead of Bellemeur by just 32 points. The early exit for the Gordon team at a race that didn't have Bellemeur in the pits could be a key factor in the championship battle at the end of the season. Event runner-up Brian Hough gained a bunch of points but it wasn't enough to catch #6 Nick Januik (first round loser), who held the #6 spot despite his early departure from eliminations.

The Winternationals winner, Terry Ruckman moved from virtually nowhere in the standings into the #20 spot on the list, and former champion Shane Westerfield moved from #18 to the #11 position, just one point shy of the Top Ten. If he could have advanced to the semi-finals, he'd be in that top group.
