The 2019 Mello Yello NHRA drag racing season is officially in the books. Today's eliminations at Pomona's Auto Club Raceway saw some dramatic action - both on and off the track - and everything from upsets to sure bets on the track. Four professional champions were crowned, all of them former or defending champions, and all very deserving of their success in 2019.

NEWS FLASH: From the "you can't make this s*+t up" department, Robert Hight does a half-track burnout in the Funny Car final, then shuts off the car, climbs out and leaves it on the track while final opponent Jack Beckman runs low e.t. of eliminations to take the event win, and finish just EIGHT points behind Hight in the championship fight.

The method behind that apparent bit of madness, was the possible "crossing the boundary line" penalty that Hight could have received if he'd crossed the centerline or hit the wall in the final, costing him enough points to give the chmapionship to Beckman. While it was a questionable move - even John Force seemed puzzled, it was effective.

LATER NEWS FLASH: In a post-race interview, Hight claimed that he did not intentionally shut off the car, and it simply died when he started backing up. A look at the video shows that the car did not move in reverse, but we've got to accept his statement as is. He did state it would have been dangerous to leave the car out there at half track, and it certainly is, but just as shocking was that Beckman made a full pass with Hight's disabled car in the other lane. Strange days indeed.
