Street racing is not a drag

Dear Editor:

Re: July 3 issue, page 30, Frances Thomas' 1976 Camaro. The caption: ....Recently a young man pulled up beside her and asked her if she wanted to drag race...

I presume the sentence refers to an invitation to attend Mission Raceway and compete in a sanctioned, legal drag race. If the reference is to an illegal street race, then its incorrect to refer to it as a "Drag Race."

You may feel this to be a small point, but unfortunately the media (all forms) continue to refer to Street Racing as Drag Racing far too often.

To legitimate drag racers it is just one more barrier to the acceptance we need from the general public for our motorsport. (Not to mention the corporate acceptance required to gather sponsorship help for serious drag racing ventures). For a look at what real drag racing is all about, please visit my website: http://www.northernthunder.com

And in future, please don't refer to street racing as drag racing.

The only thing spoiling the impact and effectiveness of the letter, which was published as written, is the headline. Re-Read it and ask yourself whether the choice of words used could have been better. Is it saying that "street racing is not drag racing" or is it saying "street racing is not a drag" ie: not bad. As Larry Pfister pointed out, "at least you got a free plug !"
