I'm barely in the gate and the first round of Comp Eliminator qualifying
begins. There's a new -- very new -- look in the category this year, as NHRA
has finally realized that Pro Mods exist. First out of the lanes were Trevor
Lowe in his blown alky "Fraser Valley Vending" car. Beside him was Glen
Kerunsky in his nitrous truck.
Lowe launches hard to an impressive early season 6.50 at 215 mph, well
under the AA/PM index. But I failed to notice that Kerunsky (in the other lane)
broke the A/PM national record with a great 6.44. Am I the ultimate blower
snob, or what?
Apparently not, as here's a few pics of an injected car. Yes, it's the
"Budweiser King", and yes, it's burning nitro. But there's no blower on top
of that KB. Young Brandon Bernstein is behind the wheel, while car owner
Jerry Darien and Norm Christianson handle the tuneup.
Pitted right beside them are my old friends, the Edgecombe Family, with
Paul Jones doing the driving of their new "Red Line Oil Special". I still
haven't completely forgiven them for scrapping their B-1 engine, but it's
great to see them back up at Mission Raceway, more competitive than ever.
Here's another couple of views of the new Rick Santos chassis car, now
powered with a BAE engine. They've already run as quick as 5.48 this year,
and are hoping for even better numbers this weekend.
Two of my old website friends, captured in very different poses. Hey Bill,
have you got a license to drive that hot rod? Hey Larry, are you losing weight
.... or not?
Shortly after my tour of the pits, and just short of the scheduled start
time for the first Federal-Mogul qualifying session, the rain started and
washed out the balance of the day. Nothing to do but head off to work and
generate some more cash for my next downunder adventure. At least there's a
great view of the downtown Vancouver skyline to keep me entertained while I'm
in my "work cell".
