1983
We were green as frogs and loving every minute of our new adventure. Debuted
at Seattle International Raceway on May 1, 1983. A deflating slick in the
staging lanes put us on the trailer before we got a chance to embarass ourselves.
We first ran at Kelowna on July 23rd that year, and made six laps on the
eighth-mile surface to shakedown the car, driver and crew.
After watching an "experienced" alcohol racer go off the end of the track
and hit a large boulder, Bob made his first pass in an Alcohol Dragster. One
attempted dry hop in reverse nearly landed in the track concession stand,
much to the dismay of the crew, some of whom developed very quick reflexes
after finding that standing directly behind the car was not the wisest position
to be in. Amazingly we made it through the season without any major dramas
and made plans to get serious in 1984.
1984
We started the following season with a more confident driver, newer tires
and a three-speed Lenco (replacing the two-speed). Bob earned his "Pro Comp"
license over the course of the first few weekends of the season and the team
started competing at Division Six points meets. This first full season ended
with everyone looking forward to quicker runs and more fun in 1985.
1985
Venturing further afield in 1985, we traveled as far south as Woodburn, Oregon,
and up north to the new North Central Motorsports Park in Prince George. The
highpoint of the season had to be the first paycheque we received for a four
car match race at North Central. Although we were far out-matched against the
likes of Paula Gage and Steve Fields (in the Bill Edwards car), we managed to
earn our money with consistent runs and showmanship.
1989
After the money ran out at the end of the 1986 season, Bob parked the car
for nearly three years while he regrouped financially and put his personal
life in order. Mandatory upgrades in certain areas and the need for more power
kept the car off the track until late in the 1989 season, when it reappeared
at the new Ashcroft "Eagle Motorplex". The first trip there could be the basis
of a book, with every possible towing mishap that you could imagine. The
return trip, for the Division Six points meet was even worse.
Despite the smiles on our faces at the end of the track, the last event of
the 1989 season was nearly the last ever for Wilson Racing. We returned from
Ashcroft with no truck, no trailer and not much race car running gear left -
intact, that is. The following year was one of much reflection, taking stock
and planning for the future... if indeed there was going to be one.
