Subject:   LA Times - 2001 Update
Date:       Sunday, December 31
From:      Lindsay Deuchar

Happy New Year! Well, after a week of building a new PC (why do they call it "upgrading" when you have to replace everything?) and trying to recover all the "lost files" from various temporary machines I have been using over the past six months -- then trying to learn new software (with mixed results) -- here is the New 2001-look webpage for LA Racing.

I hope it is a bit more user friendly and professional (?) looking. I've added some links from the News Page to some light hearted "travel tips" based on my recent experiences in Sweden and El Mirage. I hope Peter, Gordon, or anybody may reply with some similar ones on coming to the UK.

PS: I know there are some graphic problems with the links page, but I've had enough for now.

Glad to hear that you've rejoined the "living" on the web, Lindsay. And it's especially good news to read that you've sourced a new block through our friend down in San Diego. Looks like LA Racing will be making some more noise in 2001. PS: Your new updated homepage looks great in Internet Explorer, but is missing more than a few elements in Netscape. You wouldn't intentionally discriminate against the Navigator fanatics, would you?

Could you help with an engine problem?

Without giving me even an iota of a hint as to what the problem is, it's going to be sort of difficult. Want to pass along some details/clues/hints to help me start thinking about it?

Subject:   Jim Read runs 301 mph
Date:       Sunday, December 31
From:      Rob Oberg

At last night's Castrol Summer Championships, Jim Read broke through in the final to run 4.89 at 301.40 mph. We've supplied footage to Channel Seven for the news and Channel Ten for Sports Tonight, so hopefully they'll run it tonight.

What a story eh, Rob? After all the dramas and negative stuff coming out of Australian drag racing in the past year or so, there couldn't be a better way to close out the year. Our congratulations to the entire Read family and crew on this magnificent achievement. Must have been quite a buzz to be in the booth announcing it too, eh?

Thanks heaps for the nice wishes, Vicki and Dave. Great looking pic of you both, with that flamin' red Demon and all the hardware. Best wishes for a repeat of your 2000 successes in the coming racing season, too.

Just read your May 3, 2000 prediction. How did you know and now is a maybe a good time to revisit that subject.

Ken Davies - Crew Chief - Gambler Funny Car #282

Can you give me a hint about that update, Ken? I've not got enough internet access time these days to check it out and agree with you, but thanks for the encouragement to go back and take a second look at it. Now where's that crystal ball? Looks like it's value just went up a bunch.

Subject:   Drag racing downunder
Date:       Friday, December 29
From:      Helen Proctor

Gidday, Bob. Greetings from Ozland.

Calder Park used to consistently attract crowds of 20,000 plus when they ran nitro funny car events from the late 80's to the mid 90's and admission prices to the events were around $25. But in 1997, Bob Jane jumped on the bandwagon, following the example and visionary leadership of some other promoters and leading lights of the sport and dumped nitro funny cars from the program because they were too inconsistent and couldn't be relied on to put on a show. It was after 18 years of that "gun at the head" stuff that we decided to get the heck out of here. All we wanted to do was race a nitro funny car!

Some people might claim that it's the new tax system (that only started here in July) or a mix of reasons why crowds have dropped off at events, but it's been a progressive thing over the last three years. We'd like to think that it's more than coincidence that since nitro funny car was dropped, there seems to have been a declining spectator interest in drag racing. If the GST and other factors are the reason for declining crowds, then how come the touring car events here are absolutely thriving and are experiencing the biggest spectator support for some time.

Apart from the lack of a show (and let's face it -- funny car might not have always been good ["consistent"] but we were always bloody spectacular), perhaps the declining crowds at Calder Park can be attributed to the pathetic organisation of events, badly structured shows with heaps of gaps in the competition, never finishing a meeting with the dreaded curfew, and really primitive spectator facilities.

But with that fast encroaching urban development that will soon be full of suburban whingers complaining about noise, why would Bob want to actually try and run a genuine event or improve a facility that has seen better days. The place needs a huge injection of cash to bring it up to a reasonable and safe standard for the racers and to provide reasonable and civilized amenities for the paying spectator. The easiest way of avoiding obligations is to pick a fight with the weakest link in the chain.

From where we sit, nothing much has changed in drag racing Down Under. It's still the same old... same old... Bob's latest "intelligent strategy", to achieve his hidden agenda, whatever that is this week, is not based on a genuine love or desire to progress drag racing. There hasn't even been any effort to drum up a bunch of new reasons. If you look at the press release, he's recycled those used during his famous late 80's dummy spit (that's pacifier to you guys!).

Unfortunately, the structure of the sport here (the "weak link" that we referred to), means that the racers are always going to be exposed to the dummy spits and whims of individual promoters. When you get a system that is a confused blend of good ol' boys clubs operating back somewhere in the 50's, thrown in with power struggles that look like they've come from a Dynasty or Dallas script -- if only the boys could wear shoulder pads -- mixed with heaps of parochialism and lots of tired old blood, then you can't help but have a setup that is perpetually on the back foot. All this stuff has been said with monotonous regularity for years and nothing has changed. Pity really, because with such a small population, the small number and quality of race cars is astounding and somebody with a half a brain and plenty of courage could really make something of it.

Apparently the new Kwinana track is going to run nitro funny cars this weekend and we hope that they just blow everybody away with their performances. We're not so naive to think that a controlling/administrative body is 100% perfect 100% of the time, but perhaps the better option for OZ drag racing is for the NHRA to take it on as Division 9 or something. Maybe they could even wangle it that the racers get paid in US$. In the meantime, we hope to catch up with you somewhere in the Northwest of the USA during 2001.

Thanks heaps for dropping in with some very insightful views, Helen. It's rather amazing (or is it?) how "Uncle Bob" keeps using the same old, tired excuses whenever things get a little tight. Funny how he never remembers how much cash he's flushed down the "ThunderDunny" too, isn't it? I couldn't agree more about how he's let Calder Park decline into a venue where no racer or spectator is very interested in attending. I may have gone a little overboard with my criticisms of him, but no one can say he didn't deserve it, can they?

On a much brighter note, I hope things are going well for you, and if you can make it to Seattle (oddly enough, another disgrace to the sport) this year, I'll be around your pits like a stray dog looking for a feed. Best wishes to you and Peter for a happy holiday season, too.

From:      Tony Travers

Don't know just how much you know about Bob Jane over the years -- obviously a little bit. South Australian racers boycotted Adelaide International Raceway for the complete (I think) 1987 season. Many of us who had been around a long time found it hard to return. I rebuilt my Front Engine Dragster twice ("Fear This" Nostalgia Racing link on Cackling Pipes), but basically couldn't face the militant and hostile attitude of raceway management and so, after 18 years sold the car. Never got racing out of my guts though and last month purchased a 1947 Austin A40 ute (pickup truck) to build a 60's style straight axle gasser. Now this, and I'm stopping before I start. I wonder what the next chapter will be?

It's doubtful whether Mr. Jane even knows where this drama is going. As the saying goes: "It's deja vu... all over again". At the present time, ANDRA is working hard to secure the promotions, or possibly purchase Adelaide to get it running again next season. Sorry to hear that you've spent heaps of money on two cars that have been orphaned due to the whims of one person. But if it's any solace: you're not the only one; not by far.

Subject:   Please help the Cub Scouts on Race Day
Date:       Monday, December 25
From:      Allan Journey

On February 4, 2001 our Cub Scouts will be holding a District Pinewood Derby Race. This race is expected to bring about 200 Cub Scouts together at a local shopping mall for a day of fun and fast racing.

As the new Pinewood Derby Chairman, myself and my committee are attempting to continue an idea that Mr. Mike Morris came up with in 1998. After each Scout finishes his four races, we would like to give them a "grab bag" of racing related items. This has proven successful in the past two years and the boys leave the race with a smile, the experience of good sportsmanship and a "prize", no matter how well he placed.

What we are asking of you is to help us by providing posters, stickers, T-shirts, hats, magazine subscriptions, etc. that are related to your business or hobby. As I stated earlier, since we are expecting many boys, multiple copies of the same item would be very appreciated. It is our desire that every boy could receive at least five or six items in their bag. We are hoping that some donors can surprise us with something really amazing, but that that is up to you.

Every contributor will be recognized within each grab bag and also during the races. If you can assist with banners, flags, and decorations, this will also be appreciated. All banners and related material will be placed in the mall area for all to see.

With help from the racing community, we have no doubt that we can provide a race day that these boys will remember for a long time.

Sorry, Allen, but you've caught us at a bad time, as we don't currently have any handouts or decals available. If you're still looking for help in this area next year, keep us in mind and we'll see what we can do. Good luck with the derby, and good wishes to all the competitors from Northern Thunder.

Subject:   Free Drag Racing PC Game Updated for 2000
Date:       Sunday, December 24
From:      Bill Pratt

The "Match Race Madness" PC drag racing game has been updated with all the racers and times from the 2000 drag racing season. The game is available as a free download from The Drag Racing List website. It simulates drag racing in 25 different classes at over 350 drag strips around the world. Statistics are included from more than 2,000 actual racers who competed in drag racing events worldwide in 2000.

In its 15th year, Match Race Madness precedes its modern cousins by a decade. Unlike "Burnout" or the NHRA game from Tantrum, Match Race Madness features no graphics and requires practically no learning curve. The game simulates performance characteristics for various racing classes by comparing current world records, actual racer performances, and track records. The display looks like a drag racing announcer's screen.

Racing fans can download a free copy of Match Race Madness at free stuff.

Just writing to tell you that the Street Meets at Calder Park cost $45 to race and $17 to watch. Bob Jane could not be losing money from the drag racing. It is all the money he spends on the Thunder Dome. It has grandstand seating and yet he's lucky to get 2000 people to an event.

I hate Bob Jane; bring on the new Melbourne drag strip and put Bob Jane out of business.

Thanks for correcting the error in my blast at Mr. Jane. The numbers I quoted for entry & admission fees at Calder Park Street Meets were just guesses on my part. I do appreciate being informed as to the correct amounts, and I'm surprised they're as high as they are. I definitely can't disagree with your opinion of Mr. Jane and like you, hope to see him divest himself completely of his drag racing operations as soon as possible.

Hi, my name is Wendy, I'm the daughter of Jack Williams. I was there the day he ran the dragster over at Sechelt. I borrowed the VHS video from him and have transferred it into an .avi file. If you would like me to send it to you, as I was thinking you might like to put it on your site, please let me know.

It's rather large: The actual run he made, is 36 MB, and another little clip when the car was featured on BCTV while it was being shown at the Evergreen Cultural Museum is about 4 MB. You can let me know by emailing back to me if you would like me to send it along. Happy Holidays.

You still haven't given up on me, have you, Wendy? Sorry that I sort of fell off the face of the earth for the past few months, but sometimes I just "hit the wall" with life in general. If you're still interested, try e-mailing the files to me; since we've both got high-speed connections, it should be possible to transmit them over the net. Thanks again for the kind offer, and yes, I'm definitely interested in posting the movies of your dad running the "Syndicate" car at Sechelt.

Hi, Bob. I was just cruising your site when I spotted your article about "Uncle Bob". I was even more surprised to see the 69 days to Australia banner. Does the Bob Jane deal change your plans? Will you really come back? My mate, Simon Holgerson, reckons you're scared that his big block Chevy VW is going to blow your doors off. Is this true?

G'Day Russell. Glad to hear from you again. Yes, Bob's latest drama is somewhat affecting my plans, but not to any great extent this year. Of course, having only a three race championship series to look forward to is not really what I expected when I shipped the race car downunder in 1999. As far as Simple Simon and his black bug... bring it on and we'll have a match race anytime he wants. I'll even spot him two seconds on the tree and still blow his doors off. Is that an insulting enough reply for our friend?

Thanks for pointing that (some incorrectly spelled hyperlinks on the Cackling Pipes website) out. It was 1:00 AM when I posted the news, however, ANDRA are to blame for the Kwinana link. Sorry you had to go to the trouble of opening your bookmark file :-)

With regard to your congratulations email, I decided to give the page a new look. The new structure allows easier updates for us and hopefully, the pages load quicker and are easier to navigate, although I'm still slow on replying to email :-)

Well, the weather here is too bloody hot: high 30's (nearly 100 F) and supposed to be in the 40's (over 105 F) tomorrow. Too hot to sleep and no let up in sight. But can't complain, considering last summer did nothing but rain.

As far as Adelaide Raceway and Calder Park go, a lot of people see it as a death sentence for the sport. If it was doubted before that the sport needs the Western Sydney Motorplex, it isn't doubted now. The Motorplex and Adrenalin (new track near Melbourne) are now needed for our survival at the very least.

Couldn't agree with you more, Grant. The latest news about Sydney is looking very positive and a decision on the Deer Park (Melbourne) track appears to be close. Let's keep our fingers crossed, at the least.

Hi, Bob. All right, another chapter in the "Find Scotty" mystery. I spoke to Dave Hawke, in Adelaide, and asked him if he knew the whereabouts of one Scott Ferguson.

He said he hasn't seen him for quite some time, and he himself has not been around the racing scene himself lately. Most of us here in Oz would remember the sickening crash he suffered at Willowbank. Which left the car (and almost him), a virtual writeoff. So he hasn't been around to see many races.

So I am sorry, mate. I thought he would have some info for me to pass on, but I am sorry to say: ZIP. Will keep you informed, as always.

Thanks for picking up the quest from your end, Steve. This is getting to be one of those stories that seems fit for an episode of "Unexplained Mysteries" on the telly. If anyone out there knows the whereabouts or whyabouts (?) of Scotty Ferguson, the Top Alcohol Dragster racer from Adelaide, please let us know. And if you're out there and have internet access Scotty, please drop us a line one of these days.

From:      Allen Nix

Hi. I recently acquired the dragster originally built for Gary Beck. I'm trying to find a little history of this dragster. He bought it in '78 and raced it until ??? If you can be any help, or know of anybody that can be, please let me know. Thanks.

Hmm, the crystal ball is in the shop for repairs this week and the hard-drive in my brain has erased most of the data from before.... last Tuesday approximately. If anyone out there can fill in some of the blanks, I'm sure Allen would greatly appreciate it. Can anyone help?

Hope you're still able to communicate somehow. Hope to hear from you soon. I wouldn't mind finding a little bit about what's happening when you get down here finally. All the best and get in touch.

It's a bit of a mystery to me too, mate. Sorry that I haven't been in touch lately (at all), but I'm still trying to figure out where I go from here with the race car. Despite its appearance, it's still a long way (work-wise and dollar-wise) from being out there at Willowbank. I'll try my best to keep you posted as the countdown to the trip winds down. Best wishes to you and the family for a Merry Christmas too.

Another friend passes. The drag racing world lost yet another member of it's family this past week. Marie Lagana, the wife and mother of the father and son "Twilight Zone" Top Fuel team of Bob and Bobby Lagana passed away Friday after a year long illness. This hurts. Marie was another racer whom I have known since the mid '80s. She and Bobby always made room in their pit space for me.

The life of an independent fuel racer is anything but easy, but Marie Lagana worked right beside Bobby on his series of Funny Cars and then Top Fuelers, sacrificing some of life's comforts to feed the nitro monster. Eventually, Bobby, Jr., hit the track, too, and Marie was there to support both her husband and her son in their uphill battle for Top Fuel glory. I can't imagine a more supportive wife or mother. Marie's passing leaves a large void in the collective soul of racers and fans everywhere.

Our good friend Steve Collison passed away on December 14, of an apparent heart attack. Steve was a generous and personable man who made some of the sport's most important journalistic contributions. He was currently the editor of Drag Racing USA magazine. Before that, he edited Super Stock & Drag Illustrated. Steve also did a stint at National Dragster in the 1970s. Steve Collison was one of earliest supporters, placing ample free ads for the fledgling Drag Racing List booklet in Super Stock magazine. I will definitely miss him.

Subject:   Little Joy for Bray in Adelaide Heat
Date:       Monday, December 18
From:      Rob Oberg

In a virtual replay of last season's Adelaide International Raceway round of the Australian Top Doorslammer Championship, Castrol's Victor Bray bowed out of racing in the first round after losing an extremely close race to Brett Stevens. With the temperature hovering in the high thirties throughout the day, Bray and his Castrol team had worked throughout qualifying to refine a tuning combination best suited to the far from ideal conditions.

After three trouble free runs in time trials, Bray struck traction problems early in his first round race. Despite recovering to run a big 231 mile an hour top speed, he just failed by eighty six thousandths of a second to run down Brett Steven's Studebaker before the finish line.

Bray was fairly philosophical about the loss, commenting "The heat plays havoc with the track and tuneup. We felt consistency in the tricky conditions would be the key to this event. After running 6.46, 6.39 and 6.43 in qualifying, we were reasonably happy to be third and felt we could run in the 6.2's to low 6.3's when things cooled down.

Before the first round we made a couple of very small changes to keep on top of the conditions but we overpowered the track a little. The tyre shake wasn't real bad, but it cost us just enough time in the first part of the track to make the difference.

We were more than fifteen miles an hour faster than him at the finish. I was catching him so fast I thought we might just get there. It was real close but we needed the race track to be a couple of feet longer. There's no excuses. You walk such a fine line with these conditions and I guess we zigged when we should have zagged on the tuneup."

Bray picked up five bonus championship points for high speed of the event, while Stevens moved to the final on a solo run when Melbourne's Peter Kapiris couldn't quite repair engine damage in time to contest the semi final. In an all Studebaker final, Perth's Robin Judd won the event and moved into second on the points table behind Stevens.

Victor Bray and his Castrol team now plan to undertake more testing at Willowbank Raceway before contesting round three of the series at the Queensland track's Castrol Summer Championships event on December 29th and 30th.

From:      David M. Hudson, Ph.D

I'm trying to locate any old timers who, like me, were at the Yellow River Drag Strip disaster in 1967. I was standing right in the midst of where the people were killed, and would have been killed myself if I had not moved a few minutes before Huston Platt launched. Got some old photos of the wreck. I was 14 years old at the time.

Sorry, David, but I can't help in your search. I've still not really seen the full details of the worst incident in the history of the sport. There's been some small amounts of info come out over the years, but I wasn't really in contact with drag racing at that time, and I'd like to find out the full story, too. Anyone out there in Thunder-land care to help us?

Subject:   Mendy Fry to drive Johnson Racing Johnson Fueler
Date:       Thursday, December 14
From:      Bill Pratt

Ron "Big Yohns" Johnson made a decision this week to change his race team to better cope with the rigors of Nostalgia Junior Fuel racing. As of today, Mendy Fry will be driving Johnson's San Diego-based Junior Fuel nostalgia dragster. Ron commented, "With Mendy's addition, Kol and I will be able to concentrate on learning how to run at our optimum level, hopefully win some rounds, and maybe, dare I say it, a race."

For anyone who doesn't recognize her name, Mendy Fry is a Santa Rosa, California, native who raced from the mid-1980's through the mid-1990's with a great deal of success. Running a big-inch AHRA combination in Top Alcohol Dragster, Fry ran the quickest time of the 1988 drag racing season at 6.15 seconds. Says Johnson, "She is a delightful young lady and is just as excited about this deal as I am."

Ron Johnson is backing up his decision with an entirely new motor, built with "the best stuff he is able to secure." The new powerplant won't be in the car until the Bakersfield March Meet at the soonest. it will be a joint effort of a number of Johnson's racing friends, including Jim Swedberg, Joe Schubeck, Bob Meyer, Bob McKray and others.

The team plans to run several Goodguys and ADRA meets and possibly a few NHRA Divisional races in the new A/Nostalgia Dragster category of Competition Eliminator. A return trip to Bakersfield for the California Hot Rod Reunion is on tap for October.

Bob McKray is putting the finishing touches on a rebuild of the current engine, so the team will have a fresh powerplant going into the New Year. They will run at least one test and tune event before Bakersfield. The combination of Ron Johnson's investment and Mendy Fry's driving should be enough to shake up the troops on the Nostalgia circuits in 2001.

Hi Bob. Pleased to see your site back in action. I've just uploaded some more video and captures onto our Blue Thunder Racing website. Just another couple of test runs before we can open it up.

Thanks for keeping us updated on the Blue Thunder team, David. I'll have to check out the latest pics and videos and see what you folks are up to. Good luck this season with the Doorslammer.

I just RE-published the shell of the new IBAA web page. I totally screwed up the thing, after working on it for a couple of weeks, and ended up deleting most of the files by accident. Check out the new shell page at: Awesome Burnouts and let me know what you think. If you have a slower connection, it may take a while to load.

And as always, follow the adventures of the Prospector, Canada's only '57 Chev Funny Car, at Mageau Family Racing's web page.

Welcome to the REAL world of webmastering, Jay. The one where one inadvertent keystroke can ruin a page, where one misplaced mouse click can blow up an entire website, where one tiny little error can make a page invisible, etc. Trust me, I've been there, more times than I can remember, so I can feel your pain. The new homepage for the association looks great, and with my ADSL connection, loaded almost instantly. Now all you have to do is put back in all the pages that are missing. UPDATE: As of today (Tuesday), the page is not available. What happened, did you blow up the front page too?

Subject:   Victor Bray Castrol Team Update
Date:       Monday, December 11
From:      Rob Oberg

BRAY REVVED UP FOR ADELAIDE RACE

Five times Australian Top Doorslammer drag racing champion Victor Bray goes into this weekend's second round of the current championship at Adelaide International Raceway, buoyed by a world record setting performance in his Castrol Chev at the opening round at Calder Park and then another strong performance at Willowbank Raceway last month.

Bray upped the outright world speed record for drag racing sedans to a staggering 237.40 mph [385.7 kph] in top qualifying at the Melbourne event, before losing the closest race of the season to Brett Stevens in the semifinal by a hundreth of a second. Three weeks later he entered the Supercharged Outlaws category at Willowbank Raceway's non-title event and won the class with a strong 6.31 second pass in the final.

"The 237 mile an hour run in Melbourne has shown us we're definitely headed in the right direction with the Castrol Chevy," Bray said. "The conditions down there were still pretty cold despite it being November. The weather makes a big difference to the tuneup on these cars and we expect it to be a lot hotter in Adelaide next Saturday. We ran at Willowbank to do some runs with warmer air and track surface in race conditions. The car responded well to tuning changes we made through the races and the 6.31 in the final was quicker than our top qualifier in Melbourne so the exercise has paid off."

The Top Doorslammer category now boasts the strongest competitor lineup in the class's history, with new racers joining the series constantly. A large field is expected for the Adelaide event with front runners including round one winner Brett Stevens, last season's championship runnerup Robin Judd, Andrew Searle, Peter Kapiris, local favourite Dave Koop and Top Alcohol Champion Gary Phillips in his new Studebaker.

Bray commented, "The competition is so strong now every round of the championship is critical. Any one of about eight guys have the ability to win in Adelaide. We hope the testing we've done will give us an edge this weekend."

Bray recently signed a new contract with long term sponsor, Castrol Australia, and is determined to claim a sixth consecutive Australian title for the company. In conjunction with his re-signing, Castrol has launched a competition where fans can design a new paint scheme for Bray's 1957 Chev. Full details are available at www.castrol.com.au.

Bray and his team will be arriving in Adelaide early to prepare for the event, with Victor also involved in pre-race media and promotional appearances. This Thursday evening fans can meet him and the team at the Hog's Breath Cafe at Holden Hill.

Subject:   Gas Prices in Canada?
Date:       Sunday, December 10
From:      Lyle Greenberg

Here's an off the wall question: what is the price of unleaded regular gasoline in your part of Canada? My daughter (6th grade) is preparing a report and is gathering information. I told her that I knew several people in Canada and would put the question to them. Thanks!

Well, until we do the math, it's sort of like comparing apples and kumquats. At the moment, I'm paying 72.9 cents a litre. That works out to $3.31 per Canadian gallon. Yikes!! No bloody wonder they switched it all over to metric in the early '80s, eh? Now, we have to convert those Canuck gallons to Yankee gallons, so the price drops to $2.65 per U.S. gallon.... in Canadian funds. You don't really want to convert that to "real" money, do you? If so, the answer would be roughly $1.75 (U.S.) per U.S. gallon, in Canada. (The current exchange rate is $1.54 (+/-) for us to buy one U.S. dollar. Is that enough arithmetic for you?

P.S: Only one year ago, when we were in the middle of a "gas war" (started when ARCO moved into the local market), the price of gas went under 40 cents a litre at times. Only three months ago, it hovered near the 60 cent mark at times. The prices in the rest of Canada vary a little bit: some higher, some a lot higher, some a bit lower, but not much, as these days our fuel prices are determined by the world markets.

Good to see that you're back among the living, Lindsay. Good to see you're still alive and kicking. I take it by hints in your message that you need to be picked up at the airport on the 19th of February. It shouldn't be a problem as long as I get the updates from you about time and place properly.

I went down to Ken's last night and picked up the nuts; it turns out the longer studs on the manifold come with nuts from Ken and as long as they were the only one's lent you, you won't be needing them (I can't remember how many nuts I left there, and I don't have the block here to check with either.) The guy I've sold the engine to wants to pick it all up this week, which was why I decided to go and grab the nuts back.

I've just started to get all the pieces together to build the kids a junior dragster, so I might even have to call in a favour and get you to source some stuff if I can spare the time to wait for you to reply. Haha.

I better get going; hope everything is still going fine and you're going to be able to handle the hiding you're in for when you get back down here. All the best.

Thanks for the email and checking out our Northwest Drag Racing website. It has been a couple of years since we got this thing going and we have gone through some changes, in the beginning. I took "snappy's" from my video for the site (and some were pretty awful!). This last season Kren starting using her digital camera (actually she has three of them). It's been a year of experimenting and our last race (California Hot Rod Reunion) was a good test as we used both her new Sony Mavica cd1000 and my new Sony digital camcorder (got some decent stills using the memory stick).

I'm a frequent visitor on your site and always have a good time on my visits. I hope Roy (Ranquist - see below) gets his car running next year. It was really a tease at Woodburn as they had some problems. Well, got to go; thanks again and we'll see you on the net.

After that Bayview - Arlington thing, I dedicated half my life to working towards preserving the memories of our sport locally. There are so many photos, movies, etc., out there that are currently unidentified and it won't be long before all the people who can help will be gone. I feel it's so important to keep track of our heritage.

Heck, nobody even knows the old official track record of Mission. Double heck, I got a call yesterday asking if I have a video of the CPSA mph record run of 1999 showing the boards as nobody thought to record it... As we all grow older the list of those we loose will only get larger.

Remember the old Bill Cosby record. Goes something like: "My dad has no life. All he ever says when I see him is "Ya know who died yesterday?".... Later man, I'm off Sunday for a short holiday.

I hear you Larry. Loud and clear. By the way, for those wondering where this conversational thread originated from; it was the very early and untimely passing of website guru Marty Kane of www.dragbike.com fame. It followed hard on the heels of a heap of other major drag racing figures leaving us in the past year, and especially in the past few months.

Subject:   What's New Downunder
Date:       Thursday, December 7
From:      Steve Piesley

Hey Bob, thanks for dropping a line over here. Well what can I say? I'm working in an environment that dates back to the '50s. Everything we do is done manually; invoicing, stock recording, store transfers -- you name it. We do it sloooow. So my patience is running out. I'm getting writer's cramp from issuing invoices. The people are nice to work with, but when you're busy trying to sell products and look after the workshop, it becomes very hard sometimes.

Now let's try to answer some of your questions. Scott Ferguson: Mate, I haven't heard from the boy in some time. Last time I saw him would have been in '98. Kate and I went to Adelaide for some winery touring. (Adelaide is very good for wines - if you like that kind of thing. I know I do!) We dropped in to see Scott. He seemed OK, but he was only working part time, at that stage. I noticed that he dropped a line to you on the Backfire! page. That's the only contact I have seen from him in a long time. I will try and reach David Hawke in Adelaide and try to get some news for you.

OK. Next. Tony and Cameron Brooks: I keep in constant contact with them. They are very busy trying to increase their business in Albury. I think the toll with the whole new deal really put a dent in their cash flow. Now they're concentrating on shifting to new premises across the road from their current workshop site.

Their car is pretty well finished. Of course with the lack of races that have been made available in their area, testing has not come into the equation -- yet. However, Cameron is fairly toey (anxious) to jump in the seat. But as usual, business is first.

The car is going to be just as good as when it first came out. And that's as far as I know to date with that outfit.

The round of Top Doorslammers at Calder Park (Melbourne - November). My view: God I was bored. There weren't many cars in each class that attended the meet. Normally there would be cars in the infield, and also cars in the paved areas of the pits. (Near the Thunderdome). One Group 2 class (I think) was able to run a 32-car field. That's how many cars entered.

There wasn't a whole lot of promotion around Melbourne, by the way of radio or TV. The Thursday and Friday before there had been some airtime, but not a lot. The atmosphere around the track was very subdued. OK, there was a fairly good crowd. But it lacked a lot of "energy" around the place. Normally there is a feeling of expectation among the punters (spectators) but it felt pretty flat.

All the crews and team owners, cars, etc., put on some great racing. But the Castrol '57 Chevy stole the show with a barnstorming 237+ mile an hour run. That is really hauling butt! I don't think Murray Anderson (the chassis builder) was expecting that to happen.

Drag racing has really suffered over the last eighteen months or so. With no definite decision about Sydney's future, and rumours that are going around about Calder and the new "track" at Deer Park (Adrenalin Motorsports). Another burden we have to swallow is the U.S. to Australian dollar exchange rate. It's currently costing $1.90 to buy an American dollar!

That's got to be hurting the purchase of "quick stuff" to here from the land of Stars and Stripes. It will be interesting to see how things pan out over here after this season. I believe it will be a telling mark, how Drag Racing is conducted for the forthcoming years.

As with your efforts to have your car here, sitting around, waiting to fire a shot in anger. It must be disappointing to hear all the BAD press that you must be receiving, from over here. As I think I mentioned to you earlier, my cousing was driving in the Australian Touring Car series. He is hearing of sponsors pulling out for no reason, and some because it's getting too dear (expensive).

Most complain that there is not enough coverage for them. Bloody hell, isn't Bathurst enough? Companies who aren't in the limelight, get more coverage from the misfortunes of cars -- running off and crashing -- than ever. I really don't know how anyone is able to keep sponsors in motor racing downunder these days.

In other news, the big day (wedding) is March 24th and if you're free from your hectic schedule, you're more than welcome to attend. Please let me know. We will send a proper invite to you. This is just a warning! Ha! Well, I've blabbed on enough. And thanks for keeping in contact. It's much appreciated. Hear from you soon.

Gee, ask a few questions and get a whole lot of answers. While the news isn't all of the positive variety, I really appreciate you taking the time and effort to respond in detail like this, Steve. And congratulations on your upcoming "lifetime commitment." Glad to see that you've scheduled it for the week following the Nationals... not that it would have any influence on the timetable, now would it? :-) We'll have to see how my schedule works out, as I will be in the country on the 24th, but of course the race car has to come first. (That's my lifetime commitment!)

I have to agree with you totally that most of the racing news coming out of Australia these days is rather on the negative side, but it is the truth, isn't it? On the brighter side, the news coming out of Sydney over the last week indicates that the Western Sydney Motorplex may finally be getting the go-ahead.... after three years of b.s., broken promises, lies, distortions, etc. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed. And of course the new motorplex at Kwinana Beach out on the west coast has got to be good for that half of the country.

A lot of people have their hopes for a major revival of the sport in OZ pinned on the Sydney motorplex. If it goes ahead, then drag racing should get revved up and come back to the level it was at in the early to mid '90s. At least that's the conventional thinking. In my opinion, there are no magic bullets, and the only way to get things back to the former levels is by slow, hard, steady work. And a stronger economy and a healthier dollar wouldn't hurt either, would it?

Keep your chin up Steve, have some fun at Calder watching the Top Fuel cars this weekend and let me know if you find out any news on Scott. In the meantime, take care and enjoy the upcoming holiday season.

Just talked to Larry "Wedge"-combe, or should I now say Larry "Brad"-combe? Yes, they are making the change. He just called looking for some parts. I guess you will be standing alone next year (as if you haven't been already).

PS: Keep writing. It was tooooo long with no news.

Say what ?!? Man, I'm going to have send that "traitor" a letterbomb or two. Disguised as a B-1 cylinder head, of course. So now there's only one Top Alcohol Dragster in the world still running the Mopar Wedge head combo? And it still hasn't even started running yet. Right now I'd better get on the phone and see what sort of garage sale the Edgecombe's are having with the remains of their wedge stuff. And the accent is probably on "remains" after all the carnage they had last year.

PS: Have you got a line on a low-mileage pair of BAE IV head and manifold? Just kidding.... for the moment, at least.

From:      Roy Ranquist

Great to hear from you. Yeah, I'm still driving truck, but this time I'm driving for a company, instead of owning the darn thing. I'm working for Matlack, a large chemical hauling outfit based in Wilmington, Delaware. I've been doing so for almost the last four years. Best move I ever made.

I finally got my dragster going in August of this year and tried to do some licensing passes out at Mission for the Loafer's event. Well, I guess they had some really busy weekends out there and they couldn't fit in any licensing on the weekends coming up to the Oldies event.

Well, you know how it is. You go plan "B". I called Woodburn and asked if I could do some licensing passes at their Oldies event and they said 'C'mon down!'. We went down only to find that the car would hardly run. (Why is it they run at home, but not when they're supposed to at the track?). It turned out that the fuel pump was going away, so after a real bad half track pass, it was decided that we would call it a weekend.

Nevertheless, the fun meter was on and we met a lot of nice people down there. Took the car home, sent the pump down to Hilborn, got the pump back, put it on the car and started it and it didn't seem any better. Took the mag off, took it down to Burlington, got it fixed (dead coil), brought it home, started the car and now it started to sound better.

Went down to your favourite track in Kent on Labor Day weekend to do some more licensing passes. Got to make four half track passes on Saturday. This thing was starting to sound a little like a real race car now. So much so that it sheared the crankshaft key under the blower hub. (I must be getting on the right track now; at least things are getting a little cheaper to fix!). Well, we had to call it a weekend, but all in all, had a good time.

I've been keeping track of your progress with your car and hopefully 2001 will be your year to get out and do it. Anyways, I hope to see you out at the drags this next year. By the way, check out George and Karen Adams' website: Northwest Drag Racing. Click on the Hot Rod Nationals Pit Shots link. Talk to you soon.

Roy Ranquist launches at SIR
Roy Ranquist (Burnaby, BC) at Seattle International Raceway - September 2000

Wow! I don't hear from you for ages and then suddenly find you've been watching me on the web for quite a while, and finally getting your own hot rod finished. In fact, you've even got it down the track before mine. Many congratulations on what has truly been a labor of love, Roy. And thanks heaps for directing me back to George and Karen's great website down in Oregon. I'd checked it out a few months ago, but today's visit provided a virtual treasure trove of new stuff from this season. Keep in touch over the winter Roy, and let me know when you'll be out at Mission Raceway next season. We'll be there to see you take it all the way to the finish line this time.

Subject:   FMD/FMFC not being run at several events next year
Date:       Wednesday, December 6
From:      Will Hanna

It is apparent that NHRA has pulled the plug on five to eight national events next year for Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars. It is also apparent that NHRA is making room to run Pro Mod on a heads up leavel at several events. Rumored events include: Sonoma, Bristol, Brainerd, Chicago, Phoenix, Memphis, and Denver. Once again, we plan on running a comment column at Dragcom. All racer's comments are welcome.

Apparent to whom? There's no mention of anything like this on the "official" NHRA website, or even on the Dragcom website... yet. That's not to say that it won't be handed down tomorrow or the next day, but I've got to think at the moment, that somebody's jumping the gun with this rumor. And until it's posted on the official sites, that's all it is.

From:      Dean Murdoch

Hi Bob. You must be working lots (or making lots of money for the government), for your trip downunder. We all miss you and your posts. Can you do something for me (for the Christmas issue of SpeedZone) by the end of the week?

Oh no, why did you leave me so much lead time and then not start bothering me until the last week before the deadline? As if it would make much difference anyway.... Okay, I'll get started on the follow-up to the Federal-Mogul rules changes for 2001 story... and get it finished about 10 minutes before the copy is due at the printer. In other words: situation normal.

Hi Bob. Nice to hear from you, and that it sounds as if you are still kicking. I look forward to seeing more stuff soon on Northern Thunder.

Yes, it has been far too long since things got revved up around here, hasn't it? Maybe if I start working on a "Year End Special" now, it might actually get posted before I head downunder in February. Like I'm so fond of saying, stay tuned.

Subject:   Calendar of Events
Date:       Monday, December 4
From:      Patti Stein

Hi, I'm just putting the finishing touches on CruZin magazine's calendar of events for 2001. We still haven't received any information from your group. There are some dates listed on your website, but you don't indicate if it is last year's event or those for 2001. I would also ask permission from you anyway before I would use your website dates in our calendar.

If you have any dates set that you would like included in our pullout calendar that comes with our January/February issue of the magazine, please send them to me as soon as possible (include name of event, date and a contact phone number). The deadline is December 12. Any information received after that will be included in the March/April issue calendar update.

Some of the car clubs that sponsor events at your race track have given me a few of their dates. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Sorry Patti, but you've got the wrong number. I don't have ANY dates lined up for next year, unfortunately. So what are you doing next Friday?.... Oh, not that kind of date? You mean races and such stuff? Then you've definitely got the wrong number. At the moment, my only scheduled (and that's VERY tentatively) race date is the Winternationals in June, 2001. The Aussie variety of that race title, of course.

Subject:   Aptitude Test
Date:       Monday, December 4
From:      Doug Parke

Spend three minutes taking this "test". Then laugh and resume your stressful duties (like going through this website?). Enjoy! The following short quiz consists of four questions and tells whether you are qualified to be a "professional". The questions are not difficult. Scroll down for the answers. PS: We put some "dividers" between the questions and answers to try to keep you from peeking. No cheating, please!

(1) How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

Annual

Meeting of Women Drivers

The correct answer is: Open the regrigerator, put in the giraffe and close the door. The question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

(2) How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Blender Racing

Wrong answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant and close the refrigerator door.

Correct answer: Open the regrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your actions.

(3) The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend except one. Which animal does not attend?

Computer

Upgrade

Correct answer: The elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. This tests your memory.

OK, even if you didn't answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your abilities.

(4) There is a river you must cross. But it is inhabitated by crocodiles. How do you manage to cross it?

Commie

Monster Truck

Correct answer: You swim across. All the crocodiles are attending the animal meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the professionals they tested got all the answers wrong. But many preschoolers got several correct answers. Anderson Consulting says this conclusively disproves the theory that most professionals have the brains of a four year old.

No, you don't want to know how I made out on the test, do you. Let's just go on to the next item, shall we? PS: This sort of test reminds of some of the trick questions I had to answer on a Foreman's test at work once. (As you might imagine, I didn't get the job). The one that I failed on was this:

If you see some workers (who are under the supervision of another foreman) drinking on the job, what do you do?

My answer was that I would tell their foreman and leave it up to him to discipline them. WRONG! The correct answer was to fire the workers, then tell their foreman what I'd done and why. Things just aren't as simple as they seem at times, are they?

Subject:   What's New at The Drag Racing List
Date:       Monday, December 4
From:      Bill Pratt

Click here to read the "clickable" version.

The Drag Racing List Souvenir Store is open. That's right! We've plastered The Drag Racing List logo (seen in the upper left hand corner of each page of draglist.com) on a variety of products. Show your friends that you know what you are talking about in drag racing - 'cause you frequent the site that has all the info.

There are shop aprons, caps, clocks, golf shirts, t-shirts for kids and adults, magnets, buttons, mouse pads, mugs, picture key rings, sweatshirts, tank tops, tote bags and visors. Basically, we waved at things. If they didn't wave back, we slapped a draglist.com logo on them. Check out our DRL Souvenir Store for a neat collection of affordable gifts for the holidays.

Updated Heads Up Event Calendar: If you were in Florida this past weekend, Desoto Drag Strip in Bradenton was the place to be for the Snowbird Nationals. Any other December events out there? If so, get 'em in to events@draglist.com. I will be posting the 2001 heads up events soon.

Link problems are on the way out. You probably have noticed that our drag racing links have been down for hours or even days at a time recently. It was simply a matter of server power under the load of millions of hits (wish they were all mine!). I got this note from the LinkBank folks to let us know the status of a planned server upgrade:

"The current LinkBank system is not up to the task of serving the current traffic. (This has been a problem for a long time). The new LinkBank system will be ready for current customers to test by the end of the week. If the test goes well, we'll replace the slow, old system right away. The problems with Linkbank are the result of the high amount of traffic it is getting. With over 4.5 million page views per month, our system from a year ago is not able to function properly under peak loads. The new version of LinkBank operates on a different system and will be much, much faster."

There you have it. I will make sure to grab the new version ASAP to ensure our links are available all day, every day.

Hey, it's about time you came out of the woodwork, and back into the World Wide Web. Welcome Back, Bob! Cheers! :-)

Thanks heaps, mate. It's good to be back.... heck, it's good to be anywhere these days. The alternative definitely doesn't cut it, does it? Now as soon as I can get all these splinters out of my butt and get something done around here, I'll really be back in/on the web.

Just checking to see if you are going to update your site as I follow it on a regular basis and find it very informative and interesting. Just wondered if you would put my link back on your link page as we are finally starting to get the website up and running. It's WTF Racing and we are still under construction, but nearly finished.

Also, thanks for the info on that fuel injector, it was a great help.

Gee, you're only about the thousandth person to ask that question in the last month. As you can see by this posting, we have finally gotten around to starting the slow process of getting back up to speed at NT. On the other hand, it's great to see that you've finally got your site up and running. So when are you going to be debuting your new Top Alky Dragster, Grant? It looks pretty good; just too bad that you didn't have a track within 500 miles to run on, eh? And before I forget, yes, I'll put the link up again. PS: How's that ex-Canuck (Jim Grant) doing?

Subject:   My first visit to Australia
Date:       Friday, December 1
From:      Glen Brown

Bob, my name is Glen Brown. I live in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Between January 12th and 29th, 2001, I will be making my first trip to Australia to visit a friend who lives in Brisbane. I'm hoping to spend a bit up time up on the Gold Coast and I get the impression from your website that there is a dragstrip in the area.

For the past two years I've worked at the local strip (Mission Raceway) in the burnout box area. My responsibilities included direction and control of the race cars in the burnout area, assisting with track preparation and safety. (Sorry, I didn't mean for this to sound like a job resume).

I would be delighted if that experience would allow me to be granted status to visit a track in Australia and observe Aussie racing from an up close and personal perspective. Can you advise me if there will be racing during my trip? If I can get a VIP visitor pass or something similar? I can probably provide a letter confirming my experience from my local track if needed.

I'd appreciate your advising me by return email so I can plan my visit a little better. Thanks.

And the exodus continues... You've picked a great time of year to travel downunder, as long as you like "warm" (read: bloody hot!) temperatures and an occasional tropical rainstorm. Unfortunately, you'll miss the Castrol Summer Championships at Willowbank (December 29-30), but there is a National Open on the Saturday night before you come home. Drop a line to the track manager, Dennis Syrmis, mention your connection to Mission Raceway and he should be able to fix you up with some good seats. On the other hand, he might just hand you a broom and tell you to get to work. Have a great time and let me know how the trip goes. PS: It's down on the Gold Coast, since it's south of Brisbane. The Sunshine Coast is north of Brisbane. And Willowbank is west of Brisbane.
