BACKFIRE! JULY 1999 Postings are listed from NEWEST to OLDEST. Happy scrolling ! Subject: Dragster needed for trade fair Date: Wednesday, July 21 From: Bernd Rathjen Hello Northern Thunder team. We are a special event agency in Hamburg, Germany and looking for a dragster for a fair in Cologne this August. Can you help with some contacts to German or Dutch racers? Thanks a lot and all the best. Sorry I didn't get around to replying to your request in time, Bernd. There are some dragsters in Germany (Peter Schofer and Rico Anthes immediately spring to mind), plus a couple across the mountains in Switzerland. Hope you were able to contact someone and get a car for your trade fair.Subject: Great Web Page Date: Tuesday, July 20 From: Juliet I was just surfing and stumbled upon your web page... you have some excellent information and links on your page. I was very surprised to see you even had some information on our soon to be built Kwinana Motorplex (Perth, Western Australia)... you have been busy :-) Very impressive! With your permission I would like to include your link on our new website. Our site is located at www.motorplex.com.au. This page includes the official home pages for Ravenswood International Raceway and Claremont Speedway, both of which will be relocated to the new facility in Kwinana in October 2000. Please be aware that this site is in its infancy and is still under construction. Any comments/advice would be much appreciated. Thank you very, very much, Julie. Your kind comments are much appreciated. One e-mail like this makes it so much easier to press on and keep this Northern Thunder site moving ahead. Please do include a link to NT on the new Kwinana Motorplex site, it will be most appreciated also. The latest news about the motorplex is very encouraging. You've done an excellent job on the website so far; too bad the 3-D applet of the new site didn't load properly. But I'm sure you're working on it already, aren't you?Subject: Have a job? Date: Monday, July 19 From: The Boss Hey, Fornicator of large canine dingos... We have a graveyard shift available on the 26th... Gonna be around???? signed, Les Sztankovics (The BOSS!) Oh man, I sure could use the money. Unfortunately, due to my short-sightedness (okay... downright stupidity!) in not booking my return flight until the last minute, I won't be available for another three weeks. That's how long it'll be until Qantas has a seat available. Keep the coffee fresh and I'll be back as soon as I can. I'm sure by now the office needs a good cleanup... not to mention the container yard.Subject: Winners Drive Sober! Date: Monday, July 19 From: Robert Vinet Saw your website and thought you may include a link to our Race Against Impaired Driving (RAID) web site. You may also wish to join the program. Not much is involved from a driver/team point of view. You simply place the RAID decals on your car and patch on your suit and speak out against impaired driving. You will be free to use the RAID program in your marketing mix, adding a new dimension to your team. Your team will be listed as a supporter of the RAID program with links to your site. If you're interested, check out the site (still under construction) and e-mail me for more information. Thanks very much for the information about RAID, Robert. The program looks like a very worthwhile exercise and one that any racer can get involved with in good conscience. The link you've requested has been posted on our links page. For anyone interested in getting involved in a good cause (and it sure can't hurt your marketing program), check out their website and think about getting on the "team".Subject: Rotary Valve Hemi Date: Monday, July 19 From: Clive Corder I read an old clipping (1985) of Canadians Bill Phillips and Dan Zimmerman and their Rotary-Valve hemi. Is there a follow-up article? Where can I find more information about rotary valve engines? Many thanks -- great web site. Unfortunately, Clive, the only article ever printed about Bill and Dan's revolutionary engine is the one in our Press Clippings index. Finding out more about the rotary valve engine design may be a little difficult, as I'm not sure it's even in use anymore. Bill told me that they were used during WWII on fighter planes, but I don't know if the idea was improved on and used after that. The major drawback to the design was the amount of "blow-by" created and the difficulty in sealing the "valves". As for the drag racing version built by Phillips & Zimmerman; it never actually ran on its own power due to the sealing problem. At the time of Bill's death, it was still sitting in his shop, intact, ready to work on. If we can dig up some more info on the engine, we'll let you know, Clive. And thanks for the kind comments on the website.Subject: JetWebb - a new website for JET drag racing Date: Saturday, July 17 From: Dieter Sturm Here ya go jet drag fans! Your source for Jet Powered Drag Racing Vehicles, the drivers, crews and support teams. Filled with jet links, jet-tech, classifieds, Pro-Jet info and more! Hope you can visit! PLEASE sign our guestbook, your comments are very welcome. Jet Webb. Thanks for the update, Dieter. You certainly are a busy fellow, with your "Sheer Hell" Alcohol Funny Car website and now the "Jet Web" site; not to mention running your race car. How do you find the time to do all this? If you've got a good answer, please let me know.Subject: The ute finally unveiled Date: Thursday, July 15 From: Greg Coleborn Here it is Bob. I borrowed my boss's digital camera the other night and took a photo of a photo of my car. It's turned a best of 14.55 at 96 mph in October '97 on BF Goodrich "Mega-Spins" and an unlocked diff, not to mention the valve bounce at 5200 rpm. It should be heading over to the Isa in a few weeks if all goes well. How has the dragster been going?
Hey cool, Greg. The "ute" looks pretty good. Where was the picture taken? Townsville, Palmyra, Benaraby? By the way, the latest edition of DRAGSTER Australia mentioned something about a track proposed for Mt. Isa. Any news that you can pass along about that? As for the dragster, progress is continuing -- slowly -- and we won't be ready for the Winter Finals this weekend. It's looking like next year for Northern Thunder -- downunder. We'll keep you posted. Subject: Links Date: Thursday, July 15 From: Eliminator Prints I was hoping I could trade links with you. My site is: Eliminator Prints. Thanks a lot. Consider it done. The link to your site has been posted on our links page. Hope you can find time to put up a reciprocal link to Northern Thunder.Subject: Warwick District Drag Racing update Date: Wednesday, July 14 From: Peter Bower Well, I still have no personal computer to work on. (very long story) It has been wet here quite a bit lately so little has been done. The map for the wiring has been passed onto the sparky. That should have been started already. At our last meeting there were a lot of topics discussed. One of which was the opening date. It was mentioned that we should run a couple of private meetings first to test the equipment and staff. They will also be invitation only events. Who we invite I'm not sure on. If you are interested in possibly joining us for one of the first test runs please let me know. At this stage all I can say is that it will be late in the year. A drawcard for the first meeting will be Victor Bray. He will bring both cars, so I'm told. We have had so much response to our new track and people wanting to be at our first meet that we are not sure if we know what we're in for. Estimates at this stage (depending on who pulls out and public advertising response) are around 200 to 300 racers. Of which we estimate only 70% of them will be streeters. Maybe less than that. Our first meeting has drawn so much hype that we need to run the test runs to see where our weak spots are and improve on them before the official opening, we want to impress everyone enough to come back, not upset racers and spectators by not knowing what we're doing. Still a lot of finishing touches happening around the track. My guess is we will be doing finishing touches for years to come but won't affect operations too much. Well that is all I have time for. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again Peter, for the latest updates on the progess at the new Warwick drag strip. As I explained in an earlier Backfire! we won't be able to get down your way and check out the track on this trip. But we will definitely be looking forward to seeing it early next year and possibly making a lap or two or three on the new surface. It's only an eighth-mile (to begin with -- right??) but that's plenty of distance for testing and you appear to have an ample braking area, even for our fast hot rod. Keep us informed on all the developements as they happen, Peter.Subject: Sponsorship & Technology News letter Date: Wednesday, July 14 From: Lewis Farrell On your web page, Sponsorship and Marketing, you list a number of sponsorship newsletters. Our newsletter, Exordium Group Comments, is the first and only one-stop source of news, views and how-to's on sponsorship and today's leading edge technology. Would you add this to your web page? We are at: www.exordiumgroup.com/newstrlr/announce.htm. Thanks very much for letting me know about the sponsorship newsletter. Knowledge is power and the more we can find the better we'll be. I'll be checking it out as soon as I get a spare minute or two and will be happy to add it to the Marketing Links section.Subject: On TV? Date: Tuesday, July 13 From: Ivan Hi there, Ivan from Canada, looking for any info on possible dates for live broadcasts on TV. Got a bunch of Aussie TV channels, love to check out some racing. If you could, would you send dates, times and channels. Love your website! I found it through a Lycos search engine. Is it alright that I send it to some friends by link? Thanks very much for the kind comments, Ivan. Isn't it amazing how many different ways people stumble across this website? Actually, the search engines keep directing people here through something embedded in the HTML code that I use to write these pages; it's called "meta tags" and they really do help people find what they're looking for... if webmasters bother to insert them. But back to your question; At present, there are no national drag racing broadcasts in Australia, mainly due to the lack of a major national sponsor and the lack of a dragstrip in Sydney (the largest city). If you can get Queensland (regional) Network 7 or 10, then tune in on Sunday afternoons (Australian time)... let's see, that works out to Saturday evenings back in Canada. Aside from the upcoming Winter Finals show -- and I'm not yet sure of the date for the broadcast -- there won't be anything on until the end of the year. I'll keep you informed though. Subject: Top Fuel fastest Date: Sunday, July 11 From: Marc Archers Hi, my name is Marc and I am doing an assignment on rails, and I was wondering what the fastest recorded time for a rail is, and also I was wondering if you knew a site with full technical specs of them. At this moment... and it's surely bound to chance before the season ends.. the lowest elapsed time is Larry Dixon's 4.486 and the fastest terminal speed is Tony Schumacher's 330.23 mph. The technical specs are available on a number of web sites, including NHRA Online . Good luck with your assignment, Marc.Subject: Menacing again.... Date: Saturday, July 10 From: Daniel McBurney Hi Bob, how is your dragster going? Are you and Darren picking each other's brain to pieces yet? I wouldn't be surprised. There's not been any "aggro" between us... yet. But with less than a week left to get the car ready for the Winter Finals, the tension is starting to build. By the way, why aren't you down here helping, or at least bringing us some free pizzas so we can eat more than once a day?Subject: Sponsorship Date: Wednesday, July 7 From: Paul Cumming In your excellent "101 Ways" to market a race team you mentioned that research shows that racing fans are considerably more likely than fans of any other sport to support sponsors (point #34). Please could you contact me with information on where you got this statistic and where I can find any more like it. Paul, I'm not sure exactly where that statistic came from, but it probably is the result of a NASCAR survey. The connection between those teams and their fans is very strong, although some of the higher profile drag racing teams are almost in the same league. One of the main reasons for that conclusion is the visual tie-in to the sponsor. Think of how small the billboard space is on the uniform of a baseball or football player. In fact, the only major spectator sport that has large sponsor logos on the player's uniforms (aside from auto racing) is soccer. For the most part, the other sports do very little to tie their players directly to the team sponsors.Subject: Question Date: Tuesday, July 6 From: Dawn Sweetland I was wondering if I could use one of your Top Ten Lists for an article in a local racing club's magazine. Thanks! No problem.... except the lists are copyrighted by other people, except for the "Top Ten Reasons Not To Park Here" which is my own creation. If you're not worried about the legalities involved, go right ahead. Thanks for asking.Subject: Nothing too important Date: Tuesday, July 6 From: Greg Coleborn How's things been shaping up lately? By the looks of things you've been pretty busy. Well what a holiday I had. It was great getting a drag racing fix again and to finally catch up with you. I'm planning my next trip as we speak (I'm aiming for at least two rounds of the Castrol New Year Series; all depends on work). How is work on the car going? I hope that all things are progressing well for the Winter Finals. I guess I'll have to catch the debut on telly. Best of luck mate. Well Greg, we've been pretty busy thrashing on the race car ever since it arrived two weeks ago. There's now barely ten days left to get it running for the Winter Finals, but we're going at it as hard as we can. Don't hold your breath waiting to see it on TV, but you never know what miracles can be worked down here on the Gold Coast. Thanks for the best wishes and if by some chance we don't get it done in time for next weekend, we will be at the second and third rounds of the New Year Series (2000). Keep in touch.Subject: Shoptalk you might enjoy Date: Monday, July 5 From: Jim Harvey Bob, I thought you might like to check out the latest SHOPTALK over at Harvey Racing Engines. I think you'll get a kick out of it. Hope to hear from you soon. It's been a long time since I've heard from you Jim, but it's always nice to read more of your opinions on the state of drag racing. With your permission, I've posted the latest Shoptalk in our Press Clippings index. Please keep us informed whenever you've got something to say about the sport.Subject: Nanaimo calling Date: Monday, July 5 From: Pat Ryan Hi again. It seems you have not arrived back in the land of rain, rain and more rain. Have just read your "What's New" page and have figured out that you are staying for the Winter Nationals. Are you using your car or someone else's? And if you're not using your's, why not? I understand that you now have it. Mom and I both thought you might have been coming home a while ago. Being the "practical" member of the family I hope you have made arrangements with your workplace for an extended leave of absence. It would be REALLY stupid if you have no job to come back to espcially as this seems to have been a rather expensive trip. Oh yes, it might also be a good idea to give mom a quick phone call, I think she is starting to get a little worried. I talked to her on Friday and said I hadn't had any news and that your web page hadn't changed. I don't know when you last updated it because as of last Wednesday, (June 30), nothing new had appeared after June 7th. The big excitement in our house is that Robin did make the All-Star baseball team, so what with practices, fund raising, exhibition games, etc. we're quite busy. The big tournament is in Creston beginning on July 16. If we win there we go on to the Northwest Championships in White Rock at the end of the month. Our new trailer will certainly come in handy. Your neice is now a teenager. She's pretty proud of herself, especially as she finished grade seven with a "Straight A's" report card. Good luck wherever you are and with whatever you are doing. TTFN. Actually Sis, we've missed the Winternationals and we're staying for the Winter Finals. Yes, the car is (finally) here and we're working hard trying to get ready for that race. The website updates have been sorta slow as the number of hours in a day keeps shrinking as the car eats up most of the time. Congratulations to Robin on his baseball success. Good luck for the balance of the season and hope you're all enjoying the new truck and trailer. See you before the end of the (northern) summer.... I hope.Subject: Dennis the Menace Date: Saturday, July 3 From: Daniel McBurney Hi Bob, or should I say, Hi Mr. Wilson !!!! You know of Dennis the Menace, don't you? Anyway, just fooling around on your web site. It's great. See you up at Ken's shed soon. How's things going Daniel? Is your (junior dragster) car ready for the Winter Finals yet? If it is, why aren't you down here now helping us get ready for the race?Subject: Sydney Track Date: Friday, July 2 From: Bruce Read Thanks for keeping the people updated on the new track proposal. As David Cook, from DRAGSTER Australia, has probably told you things are progressing. Despite recent press releases from mindless trouble-making nobodies who reside in the cellar of their department, the proposal is STILL ALIVE and currently before the premier! Once again, thanks for your support. Thanks very much for the acknowledgement Bruce. For those not familiar with this fellow, he happens to be the son, and crew chief of Jim Read's Top Fuel dragster. Jim is also one of the principals (along with David Cook) in RPS Promotions, the company trying so hard to get the Western Sydney Motorplex proposal happening. Don't worry Bruce, we'll keep fighting until success is ours.Subject: Mail from Brisbane Date: Thursday, July 1 From: Jamie Sterling G'day mate, this is Jamie in Brisbane. I'm actually from Ontario but I moved here a year ago. I was doing a search for car wreckers in Brisbane (fixing up a '73 Celica) and somehow ended up at your webpage. Thanks for the link to Willowbank Raceway though. I haven't been yet but I plan to go soon. Maybe when it warms up a bit more, so the "push-back" girls will be less clothed.... ha ha. Anyway, keep up the great work on your web page! Thanks very much for dropping in (accidentally it appears) and taking the time to send your nice comments about the website. The next major event at Willowbank is the Winter Finals, coming up in about two weeks -- so don't miss it -- and then it's quite a long break until the New Year Series. Of course, the girls are definitely less heavily wrapped at that time of year. |
